Few travel experiences can compare to the sheer majesty of an Alaskan cruise adventure. Imagine gliding through pristine waters surrounded by towering glaciers, dense forests, and incredible wildlife. I recently embarked on an unforgettable Alaskan cruise departing from Seattle, and the journey through Icy Strait Point/Hoonah, Skagway, Tracy Arm Fjord, Ketchikan, and a brief stop in Victoria, BC, left me awestruck. In this blog post, I’m excited to share my incredible adventure with you.
Seattle: A Vibrant Prelude to Our Alaskan Cruise Adventure
Our journey of a lifetime began in the vibrant city of Seattle. Before we embarked on our Alaskan cruise, we decided to spend some time exploring this bustling metropolis. Seattle, with its iconic Space Needle piercing the sky and the serene waters of Puget Sound, offered a perfect prelude to the natural wonders awaiting us in Alaska.
One of my favorite highlights was the iconic Pike Place Market. We immersed ourselves in a colorful world of fresh produce, local crafts, and the enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Watching the fishmongers toss salmon with theatrical flair was a spectacle.
Another quirky and memorable experience was discovering the world’s largest gum wall tucked away in the market’s labyrinthine alleyways. This unusual attraction, with its walls adorned in layers of colorful gum, was a testament to Seattle’s quirky and creative spirit.
Icy Strait Point/Hoonah: Immersed in Tlingit Culture and Natural Beauty
Our first stop was Icy Strait Point, near the picturesque village of Hoonah. This place seamlessly blends indigenous culture with pristine wilderness. We had the privilege of engaging with the Tlingit people, learning about their traditions, art, and history, including witnessing totem poles being created with incredible craftsmanship.
For those seeking adventure, an exhilarating option was to board a gondola that whisked you to the top of the mountain. At the top, magnificent views awaited, along with a remarkable attraction: the world’s longest zipline.
Dining at the Fisherman’s Daughter provided us with the chance to join the locals for a meal. It was during this delightful encounter that we learned of the endearing nickname for halibut – the “chicken of the sea.”
Skagway: Stepping Back into the Gold Rush Era
Our next stop took us to Skagway, a charming town that felt like a leap back in time to the Gold Rush era. Instead of taking the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, we decided to explore the town on foot. The streets were adorned with immaculately preserved buildings, some of which had been cleverly repurposed into one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques. It was a delightful stroll that allowed us to soak in the town’s historic ambiance.
As we wandered, we couldn’t resist indulging in some local food, savoring the flavors that defined this unique corner of Alaska. Along the way, we discovered intriguing stories about Skagway’s colorful past, including tales of the town’s notorious brothels and lively performances. These historical tidbits added a layer of intrigue to our exploration, giving us a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Skagway’s history and culture. And while we may not have taken the historic railroad, our leisurely exploration of this charming Gold Rush town was a journey through time that we’ll always treasure.
Tracy Arm Fjord: A Symphony of Glacial Beauty
Tracy Arm Fjord, with its towering cliffs and electric blue glaciers, was one of many highlights of our journey. As our ship gracefully sailed through the passage, we were surrounded by mountainous views that seemed to touch the sky. The rugged peaks created a dramatic frame for the icy wonders that awaited us.
What truly took our breath away, however, were the countless smaller icebergs that dotted the fjord like glistening diamonds. These icy sculptures, each with its unique shape and hue, added a surreal touch to the already breathtaking scenery. Amidst this frozen landscape, we were enchanted by smaller waterfalls cascading through the mountains, their crystalline waters tumbling down the steep cliffs and into the fjord below. The combination of these elements—towering peaks, icebergs, and these mountain-fed waterfalls—crafted a scene of unmatched natural beauty, a testament to the majesty of Alaska’s wilderness.
While our ship didn’t permit us to get right up close to the glacier, we still had the privilege of witnessing its majestic presence from a distance. Some passengers, eager for a more intimate encounter with this frozen giant, opted for an excursion on a smaller boat. From what I heard, this was well worth the investment. They were able to approach the glacier much closer, feeling the chill in the air as they marveled at the radiant blue ice formations and heard the occasional thunderous echoes of calving ice. While I was content with the view from the ship and the use of binoculars to enhance my experience, the enthusiastic accounts of those who ventured closer made it clear that getting up close and personal with a glacier is an experience one should not miss on an Alaskan cruise.
Ketchikan: The Salmon Capital’s Rich Maritime Heritage
Known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” Ketchikan is a coastal gem steeped in maritime history. We explored the historic Creek Street, where charming boardwalks overlook Ketchikan Creek, offering an array of shops and galleries.
We explored the charming boutiques, where we discovered intricately carved totem poles, intricate jewelry, and handcrafted artwork that celebrated the rich indigenous culture of the region. After a satisfying day of shopping, we decided to experience some local flavor at “Artic Bar, Home of the Happy Bears,” a beloved local bar. It was a cozy and welcoming spot where we enjoyed a taste of Alaskan hospitality along with refreshing beverages and savory snacks. It was the perfect way to unwind and savor the authentic local atmosphere in Ketchikan. It was here that we learned about the infamous shot the “Duck Fart”, an iconic Alaskan drink that quickly became part of our unforgettable Ketchikan adventure.
In Ketchikan, besides shopping and savoring local flavors, there were more options for exploration. The town offered a thrilling spectacle known as the “Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show,” a dynamic performance that showcased the rugged skills of Alaskan lumberjacks. For those with a penchant for the great outdoors, the Tongass National Forest beckoned. This expansive wilderness, often referred to as the nation’s largest temperate rainforest, provided opportunities for hiking scenic trails, bird-watching, and immersing ourselves in the pristine natural beauty of Alaska. Whether you chose to watch lumberjacks in action or sought solace in the serene embrace of the Tongass National Forest, Ketchikan had something for every kind of adventurer.
Victoria, BC: A Whiff of Canadian Elegance
While not part of Alaska, our brief stop in Victoria, British Columbia, added a touch of elegance to our cruise, even though our arrival was in the evening. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to visit the famed Butchart Gardens, a renowned horticultural masterpiece known for its lush floral displays and tranquil landscapes. Nonetheless, our stroll around the Inner Harbour allowed us to soak up the vibrant arts and culinary scene, and seeing the Hudson Place One at night was mesmerizing, with all the lights casting a magical glow over the cityscape. We also made a delightful stop at the Confederation Fountain, where the gentle play of water and colorful lighting created an enchanting atmosphere. Victoria offered a delightful contrast to the rugged Alaskan wilderness, and it was a fitting ending to our unforgettable Alaskan cruise adventure.
A Splendid End to Our Alaskan Cruise Adventure
As we draw the curtain on our Alaskan cruise adventure, it’s impossible to overlook the unforgettable moments that made this journey truly exceptional. From the ethereal beauty of Tracy Arm Fjord to the rich indigenous culture of Icy Strait Point, the charming towns of Skagway and Ketchikan, and our brief, elegant stop in Victoria, each destination left an indelible mark on our hearts. The thrill of witnessing glaciers calving into the sea, the stunning wildlife encounters with whales and sea lions right from the deck of our ship, and the welcoming communities we encountered along the way all combined to create memories that will last a lifetime. This voyage wasn’t just a vacation; it was an exploration of nature’s wonders, cultural richness, and historical legacies. It was a journey of a lifetime, and one we’ll cherish forever.
