Ahoy, fellow adventurers! Join us as we embark on a memorable journey through Mazatlán, a captivating port on the Mexican Riviera. While our arrival at the shipping yard may not have been the most picturesque, we soon discovered that beneath the surface of industrial surroundings lies a city brimming with hidden charms and awe-inspiring experiences. Our day in port was filled with excitement as we embarked on a Pulmonia tour, immersing ourselves in the vibrant culture and captivating sights that Mazatlán has to offer. So, get ready to set sail on an extraordinary adventure through this unique destination!
Arriving at Port
As our cruise ship approached Mazatlán’s shipping yard, we couldn’t help but notice the industrial setting that greeted us. While it may not have matched the postcard-perfect image we had in mind, we soon realized that first impressions can be deceiving. Little did we know that behind the scenes, Mazatlán was ready to charm us with its hidden beauty.
After disembarking the tram that conveniently transported cruise passengers from the ship to the cruise terminal, we navigated through the bustling crowd with excitement. Amongst the sea of faces, it didn’t take long for us to spot our enthusiastic tour guide, Moises.
With a friendly smile and a sign proudly displaying my name, he stood out as a welcoming beacon. Instantly feeling at ease, we approached Moises, ready to embark on our adventure through Mazatlán with a knowledgeable and personable guide by our side.
Pulmonia Tour
As we hopped into the vibrant Pulmonia, we embarked on a journey that not only offered a thrilling ride but also unraveled the fascinating history behind Mazatlán’s beloved icon. The story of the Pulmonia dates back to the early 1960s when an enterprising individual purchased a fleet of three-wheeled Cushman vehicles, originally used as utility carts in the United States.
Initially, locals and visitors alike chuckled at these peculiar-looking vehicles. They questioned the practicality of riding in them during the winter months, as the open-air design would expose passengers to the elements. However, their skepticism soon turned into awe and affection as the Pulmonia proved to be a resilient and unique mode of transportation.
Legend has it that during those early days, someone jokingly remarked that riding in the open-air Pulmonias could lead to catching pneumonia. The humor caught on, and the name “Pulmonia” stuck, serving as a playful nod to the initial skepticism surrounding the vehicles. The word “Pulmonia” itself means pneumonia in Spanish, encapsulating the humorous origin of the name.
Mazatlan Cliff Diving
Among the fascinating stops on our Pulmonia tour through Mazatlán, one of the highlights was experiencing the awe-inspiring Cliff Divers. Located at ‘El Clavadista,’ a plaza along the scenic Paseo Claussen portion of the Malecon, these divers showcased their remarkable skills in a thrilling spectacle. Timing their jumps with the waves, they showcased their skills and courage in this thrilling spectacle. It’s a family-friendly attraction that operates on a donation basis and can be enjoyed every day of the week.
Unlike their counterparts in Acapulco, the Mazatlán Cliff Divers do not dive from actual cliffs. Instead, they perform their daring jumps from a platform situated approximately 50 feet above the shimmering waters below. While the height may not match the iconic dives of Acapulco, it is still a significant height that requires precision and courage.
Mazatlan Historic Center
Exploring Mazatlán’s Historic Center (Centro Historico) Our Pulmonia tour took us through Mazatlán’s Historic Center, a captivating area brimming with colonial architecture, charming plazas, and centuries-old landmarks.
Amidst the enchanting streets and charming architecture, one of our stops stood out—the magnificent Mazatlán Cathedral. As the main religious building in the city, this Baroque-Revival masterpiece showcased the rich architectural heritage of Sinaloa, Mexico. Nestled in the heart of the historical center, the Mazatlán Cathedral serves as the spiritual home of the Catholic Diocese of Mazatlán.
Mazatlan’s Golden Zone
As we cruised along the boardwalk in our Pulmonia, the lively ambiance of Mazatlán’s Golden Zone (Zona Dorada) enveloped us. The scenic coastal stretch unfolded before our eyes, offering breathtaking views of the glistening ocean and the idyllic golden sands that beckoned us to explore further.
Driving along the boardwalk, we were captivated by the array of vibrant sculptures adorning the landscape. Each sculpture told its own unique story, showcasing the artistic talent and cultural heritage of Mazatlán. From whimsical characters to majestic sea creatures, the sculptures added a touch of charm and whimsy to the already picturesque surroundings. We couldn’t resist stopping occasionally to admire these incredible works of art, capturing photographs that would serve as cherished mementos of our time in Mazatlán.
